Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Movie Review

In the history of Indian cinema, many films are made based on gangsters and underworld. Some actors in the role of gangsters become immortal and some powerful underworld script brings alive the incidents that took place due to the exploitation in the society. There are examples in the past as well as in the present that a movie which speaks about the real happenings of the society never passes unnoticed and if they were made sincerely then success can be achieved.

Haji Mastan, Dawood Ibrahim are those names of the underworld demons that ruled Mumbai once upon a time. Director Milan Luthria takes back the film to 70’s and 80’s when Mumbai was under the cloud like Haji and Dawood. He uplifted the same in his film and makes it a good watch. The script, dialogue, cinematography, dress designing etc all played a prime role in making ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ a worth watching. To lift up reality in reel is a tough job and it becomes even tougher when one has to frame his characters to the 70’s and 80’s style. But director Milan Luthria is successful in doing so.

In OUATIM, Ajay Devgan will be seen as Sultan, Emraan Hasmi as Shoaib, Kangana Ranaut and Prachi Desai plays Ajay and Emraan’s love interest and Randeep Hooda will depict a cop. The film is shown in flashback. Randeep as Agnel revisits the tragic of Mumbai’s crime world from 70s to the 90s.

Sultan (Ajay Devgan) landed in Mumbai as a kids and he decided to rule the city. As he grows up, he took the wrong path and indulged in smuggling. Soon he becomes the king of the underworld. He has increased his force and set his own principles. He works for the good of the masses and hence they idolize him as God. Shoaib (Imran Hashmi) grows under Sultan. He learns all the ruling tactics from him. Gradually when he becomes expert in dealing the world, he goes against Sultan.

Powerful script, strong screenplay, electrifying dialogue grips the interest level of the audience. After few box office failures, ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ comes as a cool breeze. Art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai deserves credit. He has brought alive the era of 70’s and 80’s. Aseem Mishra's cinematography is mind-blowing. Rajat Arora’s dialogue hits the ears.

Speaking about performances, Milan Luthria knows how to bring out the best from his actors. He has worked with Ajay Devgan in ‘Kaache Dhage’ and knows how much potential he possesses. Ajay’s performances can be rated best till date. His get-up, style, dialogue delivery is commendable. He was best from every angle. Emraan Hashmi was equally powerful. He has performed tremendously well. His expressions were influential. Kangana Ranaut portrays an altogether different role than what she has done earlier. Prachi Desai was charming.

In the nutshell, ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai’ is a treat to watch. It is a cult film which the young and the old would love to watch. The film will surely resister hit at the box office.
